Seasonal tented camps, permanent lodges and crater-rim stays: how to choose a base for the southern Serengeti calving season.

Why your base matters
The herds are spread across a large area, and the best sightings are early in the morning and late in the afternoon. A camp on the edge of the plains saves you hours of driving and puts you in the middle of the action at dawn.

Seasonal tented camps
Many camps around Ndutu open only for the calving months, and some move with the herds. They are small, with simple canvas tents and good food. They give you the most atmosphere, with the sounds of the plains at night. Tents often have private bathrooms, but standards vary, so ask us what each one offers.

Lodges and permanent camps
Permanent lodges offer solid walls, hot water and facilities such as a pool or restaurant. They are a good choice for guests who want more comfort, though some are farther from the plains and add driving time.

Budget and camping safaris
Public and special campsites in the area keep costs lower. They are basic and you share facilities, but you wake up in the wilderness. Budget safaris are a good way to see the calving season for less.

Combine the crater rim
Many itineraries stay at Ndutu for two or three nights and add a night on the Ngorongoro Crater rim, with a descent into the crater. Our 5-day Ndutu and Ngorongoro Crater safari is built this way. Tell us your budget and dates and we will suggest where to stay.
