Ngorongoro Crater

A natural amphitheatre packed with Africa's wildlife

Why go

Discover what makes Ngorongoro Crater special

The world's largest intact volcanic caldera is about 600 metres deep and 260 square kilometres wide. Its floor holds permanent water, grassland and forest, so animals stay in the crater all year.

It is one of the best places in Tanzania to look for the endangered black rhino, and a half-day descent is easily combined with the Serengeti, Tarangire and Lake Manyara.

When to visit

Year-round. Dry season (Jun-Oct) gives the easiest game viewing; Nov-May is greener and quieter.
