Zanzibar After Safari: How to Plan Your Beach Days

Getting there

Many guests fly from the Serengeti or Arusha straight to Zanzibar, often with a connection in Dar es Salaam or Arusha. Flying out of the park saves a long road transfer. Our 8-day itinerary flying from the Mara River crossings to Zanzibar shows how that works.

Choosing a coast

Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have calm water at all tides and lively evenings. The east coast, such as Paje and Jambiani, is quieter, with big tides and good kitesurfing. Stone Town is worth a half day for its alleys, markets and history, but most people sleep on the beach.

How long to stay

Three to five nights is enough to unwind after a safari. Add a day trip such as a sandbank, snorkelling at Mnemba or a spice tour if you want more than a pool.

Best season

The dry months from June to October and December to February are the most popular. The long rains in April and May bring heavy showers and some closures, so check before you book.
