Why the crater floor is one of the best places in Africa to see black rhino, lions and large herds in a single morning.

A natural enclosure
The crater is about 600 metres deep and around 20 kilometres across. Its steep walls keep many animals on the floor all year, so game viewing is excellent in every season. Lions, hyenas, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippos and flamingos in the soda lake are all common.

Black rhino
The crater is one of the few places in Tanzania where you have a real chance of seeing the critically endangered black rhino, usually at a distance. Binoculars are a must.

Timing your day
Descend early, ideally at first light, when the animals are active and the light is soft. Vehicles are allowed a limited time on the floor, usually around six hours, so a picnic lunch at the hippo pool is the usual plan. Mornings on the rim can be misty and cold, so bring a jacket.

Where to stay
Lodges on the rim have spectacular views over the caldera. You can also stay in Karatu, which is cheaper, and drive up in the morning. Either way, one night is the minimum, and a day trip from Arusha is possible but tiring.

Make it part of a bigger trip
The crater fits naturally between Tarangire and the Serengeti. Our 2-day Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater safari is a good short option, and the crater is included in many longer itineraries.
