Mara River Crossings: When and Where to See Them in the Serengeti

The most dramatic scene of the Great Migration depends on timing and patience. How to plan your best chance.

Mara River Crossings: When and Where to See Them in the Serengeti

What actually happens

Herds of wildebeest and zebra gather on the river bank for hours, sometimes days, before one animal commits and the rest follow. Crocodiles and big cats wait nearby. It is thrilling and unpredictable, which is why we never promise a crossing on a particular day.

Best months

Crossings are possible from roughly July through October, with the northern Serengeti the main stage. The herds move back and forth across the river, so the same herd may cross several times. Rainfall and herd movements change from year to year, so ask us what the herds are doing close to your dates.

Where to stay

Camps in the Lamai and Kogatende areas of the northern Serengeti put you close to the river. A mobile or semi-permanent camp can also be placed to follow the herds. Staying at least three nights in the north gives you several chances.

How to give yourself the best chance

Take a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch, so you can wait at a crossing point rather than rushing back. Be patient. Sit quietly and let your guide read the herd. Binoculars help you see which animals are restless. Book a private vehicle so you decide how long to wait.

Combine it with more

The north is also good for lions, leopards and elephants. Many guests continue to Ngorongoro Crater or fly out to Zanzibar afterwards. See our 8-day Mara River crossing safari for an itinerary.
