Dry season, calving season, river crossings and green season explained, so you can pick the right month for your northern circuit safari.

June to October: the dry season
Grass is short, water is scarce and animals concentrate near rivers, making game viewing easy. This is peak season, with the best chance to see Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti from about July to October.

January to March: calving season
Herds gather in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region, where thousands of calves are born. Predators follow, so action is constant. It is also less crowded than July and August.

April and May: the long rains
Landscapes are lush and prices are lowest, but some roads and camps are harder to reach. Good for budget travellers and birders who do not mind showers.

November and December: the short rains
Brief afternoon showers, green scenery and migratory birds. The herds begin moving back south, and the Serengeti is peaceful.

Our recommendation
If you want river crossings, go between late July and September. If you want calving and predators, go in February. For value, choose late May or November. We can map your dates to the best route.
