Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Arusha to the Momella Gate of Arusha National
Park, where your trek officially starts. The trail winds through lush montane forest, home to a
variety of wildlife including elephants, buffalo, colobus monkeys, and abundant bird species. As
you ascend gradually, you’ll enjoy the fresh forest air, streams, and occasional waterfalls. The
trail is moderately easy on this first day, allowing you to acclimatize and settle into the trekking
rhythm. By late afternoon, you reach Miriakamba Hut (2,550 m), where you can relax, enjoy
dinner, and prepare for the more challenging ascent ahead.
After breakfast, the trek becomes more demanding as you leave the dense forest and enter the
bamboo and heath zones, which offer expansive views of the slopes and valleys below. The trail
alternates between gentle ascents and steeper sections, giving trekkers a chance to spot wildlife
and enjoy the alpine scenery. Along the way, you may notice unique vegetation like giant
lobelias and tree heathers. In the late afternoon, you reach the Saddle Hut (3,560 m), located
between Mount Meru’s main crater and Little Meru. Here, trekkers rest and prepare for the early
summit push, while taking in the spectacular vistas of the surrounding volcanic peaks.
Summit day begins very early, around 2:00–3:00 AM, to allow for a pre-dawn climb. The trail is
steep and challenging as you ascend through the alpine desert and volcanic ash, with
temperatures dropping significantly. The effort is rewarded as you reach the summit (4,566 m)
at sunrise, where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the
Serengeti plains, and the Ngorongoro Highlands. After celebrating at the summit, you descend
carefully to Saddle Hut for a midday break and lunch, and continue back down through the
heath and forest zones to Miriakamba Hut, where a warm meal and rest await you after this long
but exhilarating day.
The final day is a gentle descent through the lower forest, giving you time to reflect on your
achievement while enjoying the sights and sounds of Arusha National Park. The trail passes
through lush vegetation, streams, and occasional wildlife sightings, making for a relaxed end to
the trek. Arriving at Momella Gate, you are transferred back to Arusha town, marking the
conclusion of your 4-day adventure. This final day allows for easy walking and recovery,
leaving you with lasting memories of Mount Meru’s dramatic landscapes and natural beauty.
