Lake Natron

Located in northern Tanzania near the Kenyan border, Lake Natron is a hauntingly beautiful alkaline lake at the foot of the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, the “Mountain of God.” Its bright red and pink hues are created by mineral-rich waters and microorganisms that attract thousands of lesser flamingos to breed. The lake’s surreal landscapes, ancient footprints, and Maasai villages make it an extraordinary offbeat destination. Adventurous travelers can hike to nearby waterfalls, explore volcanic scenery, or even climb Ol Doinyo Lengai for sunrise views over the Great Rift Valley.
