The 7-day Lemosho route offers a stunning journey through the Shira Plateau, icefields, and alpine desert of Kilimanjaro. With its beauty, low traffic, and fewer crowds, it is a top choice among the routes on the mountain.
Starting point: The starting point for the 7-day Lemosho route is at the Londorossi Gate at an altitude of 2,100 m.
After breakfast in Moshi, receive a briefing from your guide before a two-hour drive to Londorossi Park Gate. Purchase water and enjoy a packed lunch. The last leg is a 45-minute rough drive to the gate, followed by a 3-hour trek through the rainforest, where you might spot Colobus monkeys.
Pause for lunch during the trek and reach Mti Mkubwa Campsite (2750m) by early evening. The porters will set up your tent and provide boiled water. The chef will serve snacks and supper. Bundle up for freezing temperatures at night.
After breakfast, leave the rainforest and enter the heather moorland zone. Cross creeks and traverse a plateau to reach Shira 2 Camp (3840m). Tents will be ready, and porters will provide water. Enjoy evening refreshments and a cold night.
After breakfast, leave the moorland and enter the semi-desert rocky region. Reach the Lava Tower (4630m) after 5 hours. Descend to Barranco Camp (3950m) for lunch and acclimatization. Enjoy sunset, water, and meals at camp.
After breakfast, tackle the Great Barranco Wall, which is easier than it looks. Enjoy stunning views from the summit. Trek through the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp (3950m) for dinner and laundry.
After breakfast, hike towards Barafu Hut where the Mweka Route intersects. Barafu Camp (4550m) is a windy and rocky campsite without water. Rest and prepare for the summit attempt, following the guide’s instructions. Get an early meal and rest before the night ascent.
At around 23:30, wake up for tea and snacks before starting the summit ascent. The challenging climb takes you to Stella Point (5685m) and then to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Take photos and enjoy the moment before descending to Barafu Camp for lunch. Continue down to Mweka Hut (3100m) through rainforest, where you’ll eat, shower, and rest.
After a celebratory breakfast, share your suggestions with the guide, assistant guides, chef(s), and porters. Party for three hours before returning to Mweka Gate. Hikers sign their names for certificates. Descend to Mweka village, have lunch, and return to Moshi or Arusha for more festivities.
You’ll have a dayroom to pack, freshen up, and prepare for your journey back home. Before departing you may consider extending your adventure with a Tanzania safari or a well-deserved relaxation in Zanzibar.
